Jason L. Cox – Class of 1993
Agent and Owner, State Farm Insurance, Valdese

While at East Burke High School, I was fortunate to have several teachers who were valuable mentors to me in making college and life decisions. From being a member of the Service Club to participating in sports like soccer and swimming, I learned that being a part of a team is valuable experience. During this time, I gained much insight about what it takes to contribute to the overall success of a group. This foundation prepared me to move forward with my studies.

Upon graduation from EBHS, I attended Appalachian State University. Since it was just a short drive from home, I was able to visit family and friends often. After settling into college life, I pursued a Business Administration major with a focus in Risk Management and Insurance. When I applied for an internship with a local insurance agency, I spent time learning the business and assisting customers. The owner of the agency took an interest in me and allowed me to assist him with some agent duties including community events. During this period of time, I realized that insurance was more than a product; it is a valuable service to the customers and to the community. While a student at ASU, my curriculum allowed me to complete my insurance license, so upon graduation I was ready to pursue my career. I worked in the insurance industry for about five years before being asked to become the State Farm Insurance Agent in Valdese, NC. This opportunity was a defining moment in my career and my lifelong ambition. Being able to serve the Burke County community where I grew up and lived my entire life was rewarding and a dream come true.

Even though my journey with State Farm began about twenty years ago, I know that I have found my passion in my profession. Each day is different and has both rewards and challenges. My career is dedicated to helping people manage the risk of everyday life, to recover from the unexpected, and to realize their dreams. My agency offers all lines of insurance and financial services. I meet with customers and listen to their needs, and together we develop personalized solutions. I found early on in my career that being a good listener and providing excellent customer service builds trust and respect with my clients. We see our customers during the good times and in times of need. Even when circumstances are dire, sometimes the customer just needs a good friend to hear their concerns and offer guidance when possible. Assisting my customers is the part of the job that I enjoy the most.

Investing myself in my business and community has allowed me to establish relationships with former teachers, neighbors, high school friends, and others in the community that have put their trust in me to manage their personal insurance and business needs. Establishing a business that has a strong ethical foundation has built a trustworthy reputation for my agency with lasting relationships which make customers feel confident about referring me to their family and friends.

Recently, the State Farm team provided meals to our first responders who are working around the clock to save lives. I, along with several other agents, delivered food to two hospitals, rest homes, Hospice, and other care facilities. These health care workers are dedicated to their work, and this small gesture was to say, “We notice and appreciate your commitment. Thank you for all that you do for our community.” State Farm Insurance Company is an organization that prides itself on allegiance and loyalty to the community. This commitment is exemplified by our slogan, “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.” My future goals include continued service to my community and being the best neighbor that I can be!
